TRANSFER UNIT, C-5343/UPX (CTS-5) AND
REMOTE CONTROL MONITOR C-5344/UPX (RCU-1)
Target Corporation's CTS-5 Transfer Unit is a self-contained equipment for use in dual interrogator Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR) systems. The RCU-1 Remote Control Monitor is normally installed in the control center of an air traffic control facility, where it provides remote access to all status indicators and control functions available on the Transfer Unit front panel.
The Transfer Unit permits manual selection of channel A or B, or can be set to a fully automatic mode of operation. In the automatic mode of operation the Transfer Unit continuously monitors the functioning of the active (on-line) channel for compliance with predetermined threshold levels. A failure or marginal operation of the active channel automatically initiates a switchover to the other interrogator channel. Fault interrogation is provided to prevent false switchover.
Interrogator performance monitoring is accomplished by measuring some specific key parameters which include incident and reflected power at the antenna ports, receiver sensitivity and range accuracy. By front panel selection (or by remote control) the CTS-5 Transfer Unit can interlace up to four (4) modes (3 mode interlace with 1 mode changing each scan of the antenna). In addition, the Transfer Unit provides azimuth gated interrogation sidelobe suppression (ISLS) and improved interrogation sidelobe suppression (IISLS). Pulse repetition frequency (PRF) staggering interrogations are available to eliminate second-time-around target returns. Control functions also include: primary mode dwell, quaternary mode substitution, interference blanker control, and antenna pedestal rotational rate selection.
Equipment status displays include malfunction indicators for: range accuracy, P1, P2, and P3 pulse spacing, pedestal functioning, sum and/or difference functioning of both interrogation channels and Transfer Unit failure. The RCU-1 Remote Control Monitor also contains an audible alarm to alert air traffic control personnel at the facility of equipment failure. Multiple Remote Control Monitors can be used with any one selected to be master and the other slaved.
