Miscellaneous: AN/SPS-55 (M) X-Band System

Mission The SPS-55(M) X-Band System - SEAHAWK is a solid-state radar system suitable for multi-mission application. Its primary mission is surface surveillance, which provides assistance in the safe navigation of vessels through narrow and congested channels and waterways, even under adverse weather conditions and darkness.

Other missions include Coastal Defense, Search and Rescue, Harbor Surveillance and Control, and low altitude Air Defense. SEAHAWK radars are installed in several harbor and coastal surveillance sites along NATO's Southern Flank.

The SEAHAWK aids in the defense against threats in coastal waters through detection of vessels involved in illegal fishing, smuggling, illegal immigration, and terrorist activities. In Search and Rescue operations, the SEAHAWK assists in the vectoring of surface and air assets to the search and rescue area, thereby providing a margin of navigational and flight safety.

During harbor surveillance operation it provides necessary real-time positions of vessels, buoys and other hazards to navigation and facilitates positive shipping control. Used in Air Defense, the SEAHAWK's effective low altitude surveillance coverage negates the potential low level strike advantage of adversaries. Data provided by SEAHAWK can be used in operational command and control centers to assist in guiding interceptors toward specific low altitude threats, or providing fire control support to other weapons.

Proven Performance The X-Band AN/SPS-55 is the U.S. Navy's prime electronic sensor of the DD 963, CG-47 and FFG class vessels. The system is the most widely used Navy surface search and navigation radar produced today. Designed and developed by Target Corporation for worldwide use is the SEAHAWK a derivation of the AN/SPS-55, with an improved receiver and IFF capability.

The Radar Set is packaged in four optimally-profiled units requiring minimum installation space:

FEATURES

Reliability & Maintainability

Availability is a key word for any radar, as equipment down-time can have a serious impact on mission performance.

The SEAHAWK employs modular construction to facilitate troubleshooting and repair by substitution. All complex circuitry is on plug-in printed circuit cards or easily removable chassis or modules. The circuitry is entirely solid state, keeping periodic maintenance time to a minimum.

Extensive self-check features, fault indicators, and test points serve as maintenance aids. The Radar Set Control Unit provides the operator with a visual indication of a fault and the receiver-transmitter front panel immediately localizes the fault to the functional group.

The SEAHAWK Radar has demonstrated MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) in excess of 1200 hours and an MTTR (Mean Time To Repair) of less than 20 minutes.

Service Conditions

The SEAHAWK Radar is intended for deployment throughout the world within a broad range of environmental conditions. The system has been designed and constructed so that it can be stored and operated under these extreme conditions with no adverse effects.
