Miscellaneous: AIR BORNE D.S.C. SCAN CONVERTERS

Target Corporation has been designing and producing airborne scan converters since the early 1960's. Radar Scan Converter Group AN/ASA-69 on the P-3C Aircraft is representative of early analog designs. In the early 1970's Target Corporation pioneered in the application of digital technology to scan conversion, resulting in the design of the Model DSC-205. Several generations of digital scan converters have followed, with each generation making maximum use of state-of-the-art technology.

As part of a USAF program to modernize the KC-135 Aircraft avionics, Target Corporation has developed an airborne digital scan converter, Model DSC-21 1. Completely solid-state, this dual-microprocessor-controlled unit accepts raw radar data from the onboard radar set and converts the data into a television format. The data can be viewed in a wide range of ambient lighting conditions on standard high-resolution television monitors at rates of either 525 or 875 TV lines.

With its five-megabit expandable digital memory, the DSC-211 is highly accurate and superimposes various microprocessor-generated symbols on the scan-converted radar display. Four memory planes of a million bits each are devoted to radar video to provide 16 gray shades or intensity levels. A fifth memory plane displays microprocessor-generated symbols perfectly registered with the displayed radar. The 1024 x 1024-bit resolution of the memory approximates the resolution of the associated display.

The DSC-211 is remotely controlled through a dual MIL-STD-1553B data bus. Two-way communication with on-board computers provides aircraft heading, range change, display rotation, sector scan and magnification information, minimizing the workload of the aircraft crew. Operator originated commands are entered into the system through remote terminals or keyboards.

Bus communication with the onboard Inertial Navigation System provides a function for the crew to update the calculated location of the aircraft. This function is accomplished using the radar video magnification capability and special symbology generated within the DSC-211 and superimposed on the magnified radar.

The graphics generator repertoire includes crosshair symbols, range rings, vectors formed into boxes, and a rotatable electronic compass rose with 10-degree marks and the letters NESW.

An internal BIT generator tests the four video memory planes and the symbology memory plane, provides a visual gray-scale display pattern or a repertoire of symbols, and generates and transmits a BIT STATUS word via the MIL-STD-1553B data bus.
